As the internet expands, more and more people are seeing the value in blogging. After all, this is a platform that allows you to write about whatever you want and publish it for all to see. With the sheer amount of people, there’s bound to be certain trends that come and go… and it’s important to keep on top of the crowd by hopping on the bandwagon from time-to-time.
There are a few trends that are in vogue now and show no signs of waning… so here’s my tips on reaching for them!
Blogging as a Business
Blogs can open doors for you. They might even land you book deals. But turning your blog into a business requires the sort of commitment that doesn’t come easy. You have to push forward no matter how difficult it gets. You must consistently:
- improve the overall quality of your posts
- add better pictures
- start networking, and
- build your fanbase
The most important thing is to never give up —no matter how difficult it seems.
Aspiring for More
Another growing trend among established bloggers is launching ebooks and directing workshops to coach others in blogging. There are professionals out there who have a lot to share, and signing up for their courses and workshops can really help bring your blog to the next level. They make their blogs hubs for all sorts of things, like we try to do with our Learning Library and webinar series.
As a blogger, you must always strive to improve all aspects of your blog—your design, your writing, your level of expertise in your niche topics, and much more. Think about blogging as building your skills. Then put them to use!
Premium Content
If you’re a professional blogger looking to monetize, start considering premium content.
Carefully consider what you have to offer for which readers will want to pay. An obvious option is to create an ebook expanding on your usual topics and that readers can download for a small fee. But maybe you can create a digital newsletter or magazine, or set up workshops or classes and offer training to readers. At Blogger Babes, we allow exclusive access to our Facebook group and even plan on offering recordings of our (free) webinar sessions to premium members.
Whatever you do, make sure that your premium content is really worth the extra expense—otherwise, readers will just stick with what’s free.
Speaking Engagements
Many professional bloggers are invited to give talks and lectures on various topics. The problem is that some bloggers easily agree to do this for free. They show up and give talks without compensation, because they think doing so will help build their blog.
If a company or institution invites you to speak for them, consider having them at least cover your expenses. Never agree to a situation where you are barely compensated. These events rely on speakers—without you, the event flops.
Of course, if the one inviting you is someone like Martha Stewart or Oprah… just say “yes,” right away. That’s the only time when no compensation is acceptable.
Get Paid to Write
You already have a portfolio of writing because of your blog content, so you can use it as leverage to get more writing jobs. Start by pitching a few article ideas to magazines and company websites. If they like what you have to offer, they might give you not just one article to write, but an entire column. You can continue writing for these magazines and look for more venues that will accept your work. This way, you can build connections and be paid handsomely, all for writing about a topic you already love!
Pay Attention
Remember: in the end, it’s not enough to indiscriminately laud your opinions on your blog. You must learn to pay attention to what others have to say. Don’t just read the comments on your blog; answer them thoughtfully. Take a look at Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for feedback.
You can even hold polls if you need to find something out from your readers. Take the time to learn from them and you personally will grow alongside your brand.
